The full race report is below:
Ryan Smith, Simon Reid and Jamie Anderson shared the Division 1 spoils at Donington Park this past weekend (August 10/11) as the MV Commercial BTRA Championship hit the track for the second half of the 2019 season.
In front of a bumper trackside crowd, qualifying for the top tier saw reigning three-time champion Smith set his stall out as the man to beat as he powered to pole position. On a weekend of fine margins, the top five were covered by less than a second as Shane Brereton, David Jenkins, Stuart Oliver and John Newell as finished on the heels of Smith.
Lining up on the front row of the grid, Smith converted pole into victory as he led every lap of the opening encounter to further extend his advantage in the overall standings.
Race two under the flightpath of East Midlands airport is likely to live long in the memory as Reid took his first victory of the season in a pulsating 11-lap affair. Starting on pole position virtue of the partially reversed grid, the Iveco driver maintained top spot throughout the race despite coming under constant pressure. Oliver, who was back on the grid for the first time since the season-opener, Smith, Brereton and Jenkins all hounded the back of Reid for a majority of the race but nobody was able to find a way past the experienced racer – leaving him to take a popular maiden win.
Smith and Jenkins would go on to produce a near identical performance to race one in the third contest of the weekend with nothing but a one-second gap separating the pair throughout the race.
Leading the opening stages, Jenkins did however find a way past the current title holder on lap four before being shuffled back into second a lap later. As the top two crossed the line, Brereton continued his rich vein of form with another third-place finish.
The final race of the weekend proved to be a nail-biting duel as Anderson and Brereton went wheel-to-wheel to claim victory on what was their returns to the championship. Mark Taylor would lead the opening tour around the 1.97-mile circuit but he was soon shuffled down the order as Anderson came to the fore, hitting the front on lap two. From there, the MAN racer produced a mesmerising performance as he held off the charging Brereton to triumph.
Smith capped off another strong weekend by rounding out the podium, further strengthening his position in the standings and moving ever-closer to a fourth successive crown.
The 2019 MV Commercial BTRA Championship now heads to Snetterton on September 7/8 for the sixth event of the campaign.
